Elizabeth Jones was born near Yeovil in 1813. In 1883, she was accused, along with her husband John, of setting fire to a dwelling house with the intention of defrauding the insurance company. A lodger was asleep in the house at the time of the fire. Elizabeth was 70 years old and this was her first and only offence. Both Elizabeth and her husband were sentenced to seven years’ penal servitude and spent time in Millbank and Pentonville, respectively.
